Al-Muqaddimah al-Jazariyyah is a 14th-century Arabic poem by Imam Muhammad ibn al-Jazari, widely revered as the most authoritative and comprehensive summary of Tajweed ever composed. In just 109 lines of poetry, it distils the entire science of Qur'anic recitation — from the articulation points and characteristics of every letter, to the rules of elongation, stopping, and the manner in which the Qur'an is written.
Its poetic structure makes it ideal for memorisation, and scholars have relied on it as the primary teaching text for over 600 years. This poem is the natural next step after Tuhfat al-Atfaal, taking the student from foundational rules to a comprehensive, scholarly-level understanding of the science.
Riwayah used in this course: Hafs 'an Asim

A historical manuscript of al-Muqaddimah al-Jazariyyah
Lines 1–61 of al-Jazariyyah form the bedrock of the entire poem — the most fundamental aspects of Tajweed every reciter must master.
The Imam opens with praise of Allah and salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ, then establishes a binding principle: learning Makharij and Sifaat is an obligation upon every reciter.
Where does each letter originate? All 29 Arabic letters mapped across 17 articulation points in five major regions: Jawf, Halq, Lisaan, Shafataan, and Khayshoom.
The qualities that define each letter: Jahr vs. Hams, Shiddah vs. Rakhawah, Isti'laa' vs. Istifaal, Itbaaq vs. Infitaah, and unique characteristics like Qalqalah and Safeer.
Common recitation errors, the rules of Tafkheem and Tarqeeq for Alif and Laam, and the detailed conditions governing when Raa' is read heavy or light.
Arabic is called Lughat al-Daad for a reason. Confusing ض with ظ changes meaning entirely. The Imam provides Qur'anic examples to master this critical distinction.
More than rules — a method designed for lasting mastery and genuine connection with the Qur'an.
Each line is memorised in Arabic, explained clearly in English, then applied immediately through Qur'anic recitation examples.
Students are guided to commit the lines of the poem to memory progressively, building a permanent scholarly reference.
Twice-weekly live sessions build rhythm and discipline. Mastery of a science takes time — this course is designed for serious students.
Assignments after each class and individual feedback on your recitation ensure measurable, steady progress throughout the course.
